Search Engine Optimization is the process of making your website awesome in the eyes of search engines like Google. That’s all SEO is. It’s the things you do that help move your site closer to that number 1 spot on the first page of search results.
It kind of works like this. You put your website on the internet, Google’s search bots find your site, then they analyze it, and then Google Ranks it. Google decides if your website belongs in the number one spot, the number 2 spot, or somewhere on page 412.
Google considers dozens of factors when ranking your site, some of them very technical, some a complete mystery. But the two most important factors are Relevance and Trust.
Relevance involves writing great, useful content that uses the same keywords that your customers are searching for. Making sure your content is readable, thorough, well organized. This is where you really want to think about your customers, and how your website can help them.
The other major factor is Trust. If there are other websites that link to your website, that’s like a vote of confidence in the eyes of Google. The more websites that point to your site, the more trustworthy your site becomes; helping your site rank even higher in search results.
It’s not easy though. Great SEO involves strategy, attention to detail, on-going effort and patience. Even so, it’s still the most effective way to increase traffic to your website. SEO consistently outperforms all other forms of marketing including print, television, radio and even social media.
